Kinne Becomes an Astronomer!

Richard Connor Stephen "Doc" Kinne, B.A., MSc., AMAAS

On the evening of 7 August, 2007, I accepted a phased in position with the American Association of Variable Star Observers, a non-profit, scientific institution in Cambridge, MA. I've been a member-researcher with them since finishing graduate school in 2003. They have now asked me to come work with them to maintain and develop their computational and database resources.

Ad Astra!

Believe it or not, but what you are seeing is a (small) evolution of one of the longest pages on the World Wide Web. First put online in the summer of 1994, it was one of the first 1000 web sites the Net at that time.

Since that time the web largely passed me by. It turned from a programming tool, to an artistic outlet (for someone who requires a $1000 computer to draw a straight line), back into a programming tool again. I didn't quite keep up.

But that may change...

Other Places to Find Me on the Web

Live Journal. A blog I've kept since February of 2002. It is still the best way of keeping up on my day-to-day life.

My Library @LibraryThing. Reading and books are amongst the most important things to me on the Earth. Truly, I don't consider someone human if they cannot read. My Library is one of my greatest posessions - and the biggest pain in the ass when it comes to moving - but here is where you'll find the details on it.

Wikipedia.

Facebook. Facebook has largely "jumped the shark" thanks to the proliferation of applications that require you to invite all your friends to use them. Annoying as hell! I remain on it for applications such as "Books" that inform and modify just the profile.

Twitter. Track me.

A Brief Personal Intro

I'm a member of the American Association of Variable Star Observers, the Association of Lunar and Planetary Observers, and the Remote Astronomical Society where I am presently working on several initial observing programs involving asteroid astrometry, variable star data collection, and sunspot counts. I'm also presently a graduate of a Masters of Science from the Swinburne University of Technology's Centre of Astrophysics and Supercomputing in Melbourne, Australia.

Mi estas Esperantisto, kaj membro de la Esperanta Ligo de Nordo-Ameriko kaj Universala Esperanto Asocio. (I'm an Esperantist, and a member of the Esperanto League of North America and the International Esperanto Association.)

I'm a competitive Go player (currently ~20kyu), trying to get back into good play after some years away from the formal form of the game. As such, I'm a member of the American Go Assocation and play online on KGS.

I'm currently studying and practicing to recieve a Five Precept ordination in the Rinzai-Ji Zen tradition of Buddhism. I am also active in the local Unitarian-Universalist congregation.

Finally, I'm a writer. I've had several reviews published, and one short story. Some of the reviews have been published on the Net in TidBITS, the premiere Net Macintosh Publication! My first mass market you-can-go-to-Borders-and-buy-it-on-the-newstand sale was a review of MkLinux that appeared in the Linux Journal.

I have two cats,

Castor
Pollux

Castor and Pollux, otherwise known as 66 & 78 Gemini, are brother & sister from the same litter. They were born in November, 2003 from a cat that had been abandonned and had been taken in by my friends & neighbors. As my previous cats had died a couple of months ago, and the litter had been unexpected, it was assumed by all parties involved that I would take two of the kittens as soon as practial so to give them homes.
